The annual cycle.

  • Spring:

    • Research symposium - A time to present the research results of the previous theme. - Presentation of the next year’s theme.

  • Summer:

    • Via CTLE hours, a curriuclum committee integrates the theme into curriculum.
    • UB faculty partnerships are developed.
    • UB-facilited exploration: Opportunities for students to learn about a thing.
    • What about students who go to another country for the summer? (“study abroad” model)
    • Mandatory summer program.

Progressions

    • Year 0: thematic development. Interviews with community members
    • Year 1: thematic integration into different courses.

      • Research internships with UB research groups.

  • Alexa: CP doing a good job of corralling.

  • Tim: Who are we? We’re not the principal. We’re not hired by BPS…

    • What does that mean in terms of decision-making?
    • Are we not opening up a brand-new school?

  • Kristen: Similar. Complicating it, for me, is the principal and the whole team…

  • Tim: Non-negotiable: We’re not there yet on the vision.

  • If we’re going to flaunt UB to get white kids to come back to BPS, we’re not going to do that.

  • How should we structure the process?

  • Kristen: The reality is that Buffalo has a history of wanting to create these new schools… They say one thing, and start to put these resources in it, and then it sometimes falls apart.

    • Maybe we should talk with folks who have experience doing this work

  • Alexa: Past negative interactions with Sandra Small.

  • Alexa: we should ask our partners if they want to be engaged in research.

  • What would be attractive?

    • Alexa: both course release and summer salary would be attractive
    • Tim: I don’t feel any pressure. Course release would be great. If I’m going to spend time, it would be easier to dedicate teaching time to this type of work.
    • “If I can move other things on my plate, I would like to do that.”
