Discussion with Paulo about future of Making With Code
People: Paulo, Diana, Jacob
- MWC Launch
- MWC relationship
- ISF
Paulo: Multiple pieces here.
- Chris needs to get tenure, may need to publish independently
- Does ISF still need Chris’s support for program?
Jacob:
- Paulo proposes an advisory board for the project
- give leeway for the project
- Chris working on a teacher prep program
- Sobral
- ISF
- Jacob’s context is changing.
Paulo: Maybe an advisory board is too formal.
- In academia, naming projects has a lot of power.
Which parts are we talking about?
- Curriuclum
- Pedagogy
- Systems
- Brand
What kind of collaboration are we looking for?
- Are we accountable to each other?
- Does control transfer to a higher-level org?
- Are there inclusion criteria?
What are the high-level values?
Paulo: One thing we would like to do is the work in Sobral. It’s different enough that it’s adapted to a very different context. Short hours, middle school, different context. Developing a K-8 curriculum for Brazil.
- It helps to bring a brand.
What’s more interesting to me is the intellectual conversation. A lot of Constructionism priorities are being lots in the cacophony of CS education.
- ECS (monolith)
- NetLogo (platform)
- P5 js
- Research platform
How do we assert our own ownership over this, while holding on to collaboration?
Jacob: Collect the assets that have been created so far, publish them in a more static way, and then be able to cite that.
Paulo: With Logo and Scratch, people became emperors of their own kingdoms. We could do better.
Snapshot: Create a jumping-off point.
- A paper summarizing what we’ve done
- A practitioner-facing website
- A SIGCSE paper
Launch
Potentially, we could do an informal get-together
