Advice on reducing cell phone spending
Currently our family phone bill is $263 per month, or $3156 per year. Overall, this plan is about as good as any available. How does the bill break down?
- 85 Base plan fee
- 80 20 each for four lines
- 26 Insurance
- 9 Insurance Support
- 25 Buying Chris’s phone on installment plans ($750 total)
- 38 Taxes and fees
Suggestions
- I suggest we stop paying for insurance and insurance support. There are a lot of articles online about how phone insurance is not a good idea. (https://www.cnet.com/how-to/should-you-get-month-to-month-phone-insurance/) The insurance companies have a terrible reputation for denying claims because of technicalities, you have to pay $50-$200 every time you file a claim, and if they do replace your phone, they’ll give you an old, used phone. Besides the insurance, we’re paying $9 per month for insurance support. I can’t figure out what this buys us.
- I suggest we not buy phones in the future from ATT. It would be cheaper to buy them from Apple.
- It looks like we can get a $10/month discount by paying with autopay from a debit card.
