3 visits to Thailand. Deadlines. Three papers promised by December

Board meeting July 31: They really want to show something to the board about research.

One of the papers promised was a white paper (big) reporting on research, for a lay audience. (Think Khun Paron, Tukta, all MIT grads of some sort.)

One of the tensions: What Kun Paron really wants is a “yay, celebratory” something that will get international recognition. We think there is a lot that should be seen internationally. Aiming for MIT magazine.

The other half: people like Roger, Tukta, others asking for research to guide them into the next two decades of their work. We want to say things that have gone well, particularly things that they might not have noticed–and why. Where have they struggled in ways they might not have noticed?

For example, Kun Paron is very aware that leadership changes at the top have led to the erasure of constructionism in schools and in industry.

Chris might be able to take some, show the outline and show me some of the sections of analysis on one village. Translate to a lay language.

A section on DSIL. The school, a means of training other people. People from chemical companies doing 6-month internships there.

A bunch of things led to success.

  • One goal of foundation is to transform Thailand. Emerged when Asian bubble burst, 1997.
  • Kun Paron’s leadership. Roles of different people in the foundation. His high status and connections do make a difference.
    • Controls accountability for it. Pretty loose. Self-accountability.
