Add note from bogost: Think of a medium as the aesthetic form of common materials. Poetry aestheticizes language. Painting aestheticizes flatness and pigment. Photography does so for time. Film, for time and space. Architecture, for mass and void. Television, for economic leisure and domestic habit. Sure, yes, those media can and do tell stories. But the stories come later, built atop the medium’s foundations.
– keep coding stories – get autocoding in place
Chapter 3: - Filter and export stories - on server - filter for relevance, significance (not too short, not fake forks) - filter for consenting author - export in codeable format - set up coding env - write dialed-in codebook. - code by hand - audocode tech affordances. I’m currently working on RQ3: How do participants draw on literacy practices in developing computational thinking skills?
ANALYSIS OF DISSERTATION. Frequency of compilations. Patterns of timestamps. Temporal patterns in how they are distributed. People tackle more complex tasks over time. Are there multiple groups of how people go through the unit? Do social people have different patterns? Sentiment analysis? Variable names? Some kind of correlation between more complex code structure and how the language changes.

Computational media can play different roles within a literacy space; they are best analyzed in different ways. The extensions of traditional techniques yields interesting new theoretical ground. When computational media are texts, we can extend literary analysis to analyze them (Vee CITE), and can use interactional positioning to consider the relationship between the space of meaning within the text and the space
STORY CODING What do I mean by critical consciousness? positionality perspective-taking awareness of one’s own way of making meaning. change in identity
SUB-ANALYSES Multiliteracy practices emerged out of historical development (not surprising). Historical development of critical awareness makes it more likely we’ll see critical consciousness here.
STORY ANALYSIS: Showing how the story makes use of representational and microworld dynamics to function as a critical discourse model.
MEASURES historical computational literacy (Code literacy factors) historical textual literacy (Text literacy factors) enacted computational literacy (Fairy assessment)
— Peoples’ historical literacy practices and background experience. — Literacy assessment, experience of discrimination — Peoples’ use of representational and microworld techniques — As coded in their projects — As reported in the surveys — Peoples’ adoption of critical stance — As coded in their projects — As reported in the surveys Question: How would I make sense of the Fairy Test? Enacted computational thinking practices
One simple analysis would be: Does enacted computational literacy help students develop a critical stance? critical stance ~ successful computational thinking
Alternative explanations: Maybe those people just happen to have more (or less) experience with discrimination So control for experience with discrimination Maybe those people
