Research funding

– develop a strategic plan for funding – research agenda – education agenda looping learning back into graduate education creating research opportunities improving relationship between U and city

– potential funders – federal – NSF (EHR) EHR Core Research: STEM Learning and Learning Environments, Broadening Participation in STEM fields Building Capacity in STEM Education Research (ECR: BCSER) Computer Science for All: Researcher Practitioner Partnerships Dear Colleague Letter: Developing and Testing New Methodologies for STEM Learning Research, Research Syntheses, and Evaluation Dear Colleague Letter: STEM Workforce Development Utilizing Flexible Personal Learning Environments

Need to put funding proposals in the context of long-range goals. For me, these are around developing an educational system which cultivates critical computational literacies. I want a solid, literacy-based vision for K-12 CS, and then I want to work on how to make it happen. This is why ending with the Eisenhart piece is a good idea–it takes a long-range view.

For example, how shall we handle IA in Education? I have a Master’s degree in CS with a specialization in AI. My brother worked in Google X developing AI. I know it’s a lot of hot air, and especially in K-12. What was true remains true: solid mathematical foundations are important. Want to get ready for AI? Learn linear algebra.

From Roy: Follow the money. I should have a section on grants I know about, and another on grants I’m looking toward.

TODO: – Read strategic plans of funders.

My strategic plan for the first year of my professorship: – get to know campus resources (including plans for upgraded, refocused PhD cohort) – get to know local schools (or less local if necessary), – November: Have in place plans for NSF grants to pursue

STRATEGIC PLAN Goal: Develop an educational system which equitably cultivates critical computational literacies, to help all children participate in designing and realizing possible futures. ** TODO is this supported by national academies reports? – Articulate a vision of critical computational literacies backed by theoretical constructs. – Develop tools and pedagogies to support this vision – Build CS teaching capacity
– Develop research methodologies to move toward this goal.

Question: Does Buffalo have expectations or preferences around pursuing research grants vs. education grants?
