Monica Sircar Grad School Application feedback

Hi Monica,

Here’s some feedback on your research proposal and personal history. I’m familiar with, but not an expert, in the GRF and with the fields you’re talking about. So if any of my suggestions don’t ring true, it’s probably best to ignore them!

I’ll start with the research statement.

three-dimensional instruction.

I think the title could use some revision. I’m not quite sure what “educative curriculum materials” means (educative to teachers or to students? curriculum for students? for teachers as PD?) I also wonder if it’s best to refer to NGSS or to a more general problem of which designing for NGSS is a case. At stake is whether you’re positioning yourself toward solving practical or theoretical problems. There’s usually a bias toward theoretical problems with practical implications (hence intellectual merit/broader impact).

In your personal history,

Maybe position self more strongly inside of scientific community of practice in first para

Center practices.

Para 3: Identity.

Narrative centers around personal history.

INquiry as constrictivist, but not necessarily focused on practices.

In NGSS design, how do you help teachers learn to make it happen, not just read about it?
