Untitled Unfold Studio is a free, open-source web application designed to support a literacy-based approach to teaching computer science. A substantial body of research has shown that computer science, as it has historically been framed, offers few opportunities for women, people of color, and non-English-speakers to develop interest and join the community of practice. Many students do not feel welcome in computer science and do not see how it might be useful or empowering. Unfold Studio embeds computer science in the practice of interactive storytelling, a blend of writing and programming which allows authors to create playable stories (or text-based games). This creates space for students to take up computer science in the context of their own identities and lived experiences, using computation to represent, share, and critically analyze their own lives. It also offers powerful interdisciplinary connections to the humanities and social sciences. In the context of Brazilian education, it could be particularly effective in de-centering English as the dominant language of computer science practice, and make space for students to draw on their diverse linguistic repertoires.
