DIANA IBARRA Schedule of events: When is the deadline? THE MEETING What are the requirements: graduate feeling like they are already part of building the future.
Hang, your reflection shows some interesting strategies for finding new ideas, which could be useful design ideas: when is it more helpful to search online, explore the materials, collaborate with a partner? It was interesting to contrast building Ikea furniture (it’s a skill!) with building with materials which don’t yet have a form. (I’d like to go a step further and think about materials which aren’t even designated as “maker materials” like in Paulo’s article. Finding stuff on the street 🙂
Your reflection on the emotional process was powerful and important as well. You’re absolutely right that the students who seem advanced to you got there through struggle, just like everyone else. It’s really important that we provide people environments where they can struggle without judgment—though, as we’ve discussed with code, BBA doesn’t always succeed. But it’s even harder in high-pressure schools… As a CS teacher, I felt like I was running a secret class where people were not under pressure of grades, but had some space to explore and get to know code.
