Leif check-in

Leif check-in Haven’t figured out how to be productive except for debugging.

WHAT ABOUT THE TOOL? One kid wanted to comment.  Wanted to make the story different based on previous stuff.      Hard to navigate to a previous explanation of that.

I go to what’s next or quickstart. In Google Docs you have the ability to copy a doc. (Could you copy a book?)

I have a hunch that it could be good to have multiple authors for a story.

Are people wanting to collaborate on stories?

How could students grant access to the teacher to make suggestions, (and then revoke it?)

Tools that are good for teachers: There’s often a way for the teacher to control or edit.

ARTIFACT: Created a list of names, usernames, storynames.

Public books?

In code.org AppLab uses a blocks/text frame.

Version history. Kids use control-z to back up, but it would be nice to be able to see the history.

On code.org, you can switch between fully-editable and not-fully-editable, but you can’t go back.

DEBUGGING –You gotta have DONE.

–When I look at code, I go from top-down. When I look at errors, they go in the reverse order.

There are so many students who just aren’t engaging, and aren’t going back to it. It would be great if there were some exit survey.

ARE THERE EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS FOR WHOM IT WORKED? — After YouTube blocked, students spent a lot of time on SoundCloud

Janaya: “Society vs. Reality” The idea for the app was to list some things that many people tend to believe in, and the user chooses one, and then the story presents gentle arguments against that position.

They don’t know what to do.

AS A TEACHER, WHAT HELPED WITH LEARNING Saw it on a list of course workshops, connected with language arts teacher next door. The theme was exploring choice and the meaning of choices that they make. So that teacher wanted to figure out how to do that in

I enjoy it more than any of the others. I was using CS first with Google, decent, formulaic. I miss that, having a more open-ended teaching experience.

Next will start one week from Monday, 3/25-4/12. There will be one or two more , through April 19. Then one or two more.
