PAUSD Board Presentation Slides Chris coding SLIDE 2

I want the back story on why these goals were set.  Defining CS isn’t really part of the mandate—it’s taken as a known thing; the question is whether it’s right for PAUSD.

SLIDE 3

“Computing systems are more than tools, as they have the power to facilitate personal and creative expression.” “computers are both the paint and paintbrush”

SLIDE 4

“promotes inclusion and celebrates diversity.”     -> how?

SLIDE 5

equity inclusive computing culture informed citizens contribute productively

It’s weird to me that the bread-and-butter of CS is not mentioned here.

SLIDE 7

Recommendations decontextualized… For example, not situated as the result of studying this community.

SLIDE 9

no connection to the high-level goals

SLIDE 11 Interesting that students already take middle-school CS.     Karin Forssell

Already implemented. How involved were these teachers in drafting the recommendations?

SLIDE 15 (19:4*) in favor of HS grad req is not nearly unanimous. Want to hear from the dissenters! JOBS: Draw on Paulo’s paper “when we allow students the option to ignore computer science, we are putting the label of autonomy onto the fact of discrimination.” Unpack this…

SLIDE 17 “Too few students of color, and too few girls take computer science in PAUSD. This has to change. In an ideal world this might happen by eliminating all requirements and attracting a perfect representation of all populations to each important area of study. But whatever the reason for it, the fact is that we have failed to achieve even a remote semblance of this ideal. We must retreat to practical means that move us forward.”
