Paulo Meeting 2018-04-19

Paulo Meeting 2018-04-19 **Transcript of last week’s meeting: **

**1.Paulo’s advice on the academic hiring process. **     Cycles start in late fall; interviews happen in early winter.

Lining up for 2018 applications would be really ambitious. We should probably aim for 2019.

But some people do a selective application the first year, to test the waters.

There are generally two strategies: either do a postdoc, or apply straight out of PhD.

If you’re going to do a postdoc, it’s really only worth it if you can find someone who will sponsor you but allow you to advance your own research. That way, you can have more on your CV for job applications. You can also have research lined up to publish as soon as you’re hired, which helps with tenure.

Some schools (CMU, for example) prefer to hire people right out of the PhD. Paulo recommends getting everything done and then taking a quarter to finish things up nicely, or finding a 1-year postdoc. Columbia would work well if Paulo could find the funding.

For a competitive application, I should have 1 or 2 or 2.5 journal papers out.

It would be good to try to minimize being in competition with Rich for jobs.

2.Feedback on QP The weak place was in qualitative analysis.  We should go through the data, and think about how to analyze it.  Need to develop qualitative methods.      How can I get some support on this? Michelle? Dor?

Chris asked in particular for support in quantitative ethnography.

Make sure, before jumping into new studies, that there’s closure on previous stuff.
