GMS Observation 121117
GMS Observation 12/11/17 I arrive a few minutes after class has started; students are playing in an InkWorld made by students last year. “I want to do that! How did you get there?”
What kinds of things do you think we make with ink? They are like choose your own adventure stories They are like Scratch. Isabel did one. And you died if you didn’t pick purple.
—> This was a little javascript framework I built for a student three years ago.
Sophie, you’re featured!
OK, I found out a hack.
Does everyone have to die at the end, like the other one?
I’ve noticed this before, but having paper can be really helpful when learning a new interface on the computer—I watch two girls sitting together and reading the text for the story line-by-line.
It didn’t save? Why not?
Is this like Scratch where you can do multiple projects at the same time? Because I really want to keep working on this one.
I was kind of getting confused because why was it saying that.
How do you do a subchoice? (The student sees this in an imperative mode. (Could show a graph of choices…) The student has discovered that using ++ allows for subchoices. How do you think you could do a subsubchoice? Three pluses. Oh, so that’s how you make those long complicated stories. Sophie: In a few minutes we are going to see another way to do that.
One other way to make choices and choices is to make a kind of map. These are called knots. I wrote an ink program to match this story. Does someone want to act it out for me?
I feel like I just want to add on to yours.
You know what I’d like to see you try? Is making a knot. See how you have this big chunk?
