Visions of the learner
Visions of the learner One predominant vision of the learner is that while the learner’s conscious awareness of learning processes (metacognition) is very important, there’s a lot more going on than we are consciously aware of.
This manifests for example:
– in behavioral economics, which is trying to redefine an economic model of people as other than rational utility maximizers
— in HCI’s user research, which gives little credence to peoples’ accounts of why they do things, and instead relies on ethnographic methods to see how people actually behave.
— in learning analytics / educational data mining, which are interested in synthesizing low-level signals (eye tracking, discourse) to explain peoples’ higher level behavior
I am interested in the ways dynamic systems theory accommodates these, seeing learning as taking place at many levels at once.
