Freewrite: Do I understand myself as having a critical stance in my work? Yes. I see my work as surfacing the ways in which technologies participate in framing our experience, and in that context, how they participate in constituting hierarchical categories. The critical aspect of my work is in demonstrating their workings. For example, language ideologies study how linguistic metapragmatics (talk about the nature of language and its proper use) produces social categories. There is a critical, transformative nature to this work as well, in that hegemony operates by naturalizing and thus foreclosing other possibilities.
