Major conclusions: stress and adaptation The brain is the central organ of stress and adaptation to stress and does so through the autonomic, neuroendocrine, immune, and metabolic systems, via the active process of allostasis. The brain is itself a target of the dysregulation and overuse of allostasis resulting in allostatic load and overload, which also is manifested in the body as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis, and other disorders that commonly increase with age.
