MediaX Meeting Notes

MediaX Meeting Notes Martha Russell, Jianming Dong, Magnus ____ (scandanavian UI designer)

The project seems to be going as expected. Huawei is particularly interested in general patterns of teen mobile usage.       -> How does this study fit into the larger patterns of teen mobile usage?      -> How to keep users engaged?      -> How does mobile usage fit into how they think about themselves and their lives?

// If I project these questions onto mine, what is their magnitude?

Tip: Have a clear goal. If the app doesn’t succeed, it’s ok.  Research tip: We care about the before and after. Make sure to collect “before” data.

Paul: Interested in the difference between how people interact with the physical and the digital. How do you capture the moment when people engage?      —> Maybe I should come observe the release of a Verde issue!      —> And a C-Mag issue

Some big ideas: Immediacy. Identity.

There’s news and there’s the reaction. That’s news too.

People are often looking for people they know. This could be an important trajectory into being an engaged citizen.

Martha suggests looking into Byron Reeves: How people change screens. They have a short attention span before switching. 19 seconds.       “Design for the pause button.” I have no idea that this once meant.      Physiological excitement—maintain a state of arousal.            // To what extent does this coincide with the concerns of an educator?      Paul observes himself switching tasks, asking himself, “Why am I doing this?" Martha: One of the things that comes [with digital interfaces] is the ability to track.       —> What does tracking do to the experiences of students?       —> Perhaps readings on the establishment of subjectivity would be helpful here.
