Class Notes The world is constructed in a way that facilitates some peoples’ progress through it, and not others. Social theory is learning to notice/bump up against curbs, even though you don’t have to. 

Language, as an object, emerges at about the same time as European contact with the other. 

Vivek: Is it just the discourse? / How and to what extent does the social practice get reified in the object?

There is no genre—but there is a relationship with the reader. She is proposing a new set of terms of engagement. (How can this be?)

Code-switching—sometimes positioned as an inability to communicate effectively in any language. 

Indexicaiity: what gets points to. // A CS analogy: 

The presumption of intelligibility, the right to access and understanding (as in Scott’s legibility)

Hooks, oppositional gaze. There is a set of embidied experiences that get articulated by the poetics of language.  Why occupy and not decolonize? (The irony of the occupy movement; that the land is already occupied)

The project of the academy—knowledge production—is not supposed to take experience into account.
