Class Notes 4/14/16 I chose to mark the part of the map called “Mind Models” on the Interfaces stream.

The bottleneck remains 

I have friends who work at companies which monitor the state of streets, listen in on living room conversations,  The bottleneck remains at the physical interface. Haptics remain clunky. Non-intrusives such as video, voice soar. 

Mind models as as interface.       Siri, Google voice helper work well at one level, but given the recent dominance of theory-free models, how far will we be able to go?      3d modeling: keyframes to rigid bodies to nerve simulations to “inside out” models       Hidden Markov Models, Bayesian paths

Glass box? Black box?      IRL: Institute for Research on Learning           Bill Clancy: diagnostic model was great, but could not explain reasoning.            Question: Is our confidence in “black box” models changing?                —> When we have two and they get different results, we get very inquisiive

VR vs. AR? Weiser is a big fan of AR, not VR. 

When you go to the movies, you know why you’re there. 

I think media technologies will be increasingly concerned with pedagogical questions—how and why we play a role in mediating users’ experiences by exerting some control (scaffolding) on the user’s purposes, context, subjective phenomenology
