This diagram is my attempt to bring together conceptions of literacy from the learning sciences and from the field of new literacies. At the top you can see practices at the cognitive, the situated, and the critical scales. One axis of literacy is radial. We can ask questions about literacy practices at and across different scales. Literacy is about communities of practice reading and writing texts, broadly understood. It's about symbolic systems. Different infrastructural technologies--books, Twitter, the law--have different possibilities for practice at each scale. So a second axis is the relationship between infrastructure and practice. --- class: center background-position: top background-image: url(/images/slides/sketch_1_designing_futures.png) background-size: contain .bottom-third.center[ # Community-based design of a CS teacher preparation program ] --- ## Goals Two long-standing challenges in scaling up access to high-quality secondary CS: 1. Lack of high school CS course offerings 2. Lack of qualified CS teachers. Are there reciprocal benefits to designing solutions to both problems at the same time? Both problems depend on building a broadly-shared vision of how and why computer science will become part of the school. --- ### Logic model --- .full-bleed[ .half-left[] .half-right[ .half-frame[ # Research priorities Theory: Put people, communities, language, and culture at the center Subjectivity: Focus on social understandings and definitions of tech Groundedness: Core epistemic issues emerge through implementation ]]] ??? --- ## AI Design Studio Spring 2024
