Credentialing computation: Empowering teachers in computational thinking through educator microcredentials

This chapter details Digital Promise’s development and implementation of educator micro-credentials (MCs) in computational thinking (CT). As one of the leading national organizations around competency-based education for K-12 teachers, Digital Promise has been offering a wide range of educator MCs since 2012. The organization first developed its micro-credentials in computational thinking in 2016, recognizing that if current teachers are to integrate CT and introductory computer science (CS) into the school day, they need opportunities to develop their own content knowledge as well as subject-specific pedagogical strategies. This understanding is illustrated through the three components of a micro-credential. The first component is the submission of two to three student-generated projects highlighting grasp of relevant concepts and practices; the second component is the instructor lesson plans related to these student projects; the third component is evidence of the teacher’s reflective practice in the form of reflection on where students particularly excelled and struggled.
